In the 19th century, Borgerhout developed predominantly as an industrial municipality. A thriving commercial centre emerged in its confines along the Turnhoutsebaan. During that period, Borgerhout fused with the City of Antwerp. In 1914, the territory of the municipality was expanded under mayor Karel De Preter to include the current territory of Borgerhout to the south of the Herentalsevaart like Te Boelaerpark. This park constitutes an attractive green oasis strongly geared to active recreation with sport lawns, sunbathing areas and a playground. The extensive network of paths attracts many strollers, joggers and cyclists.
